Skyforce Q&A: Head Coach Dan Bisaccio

By Sioux Falls Skyforce Staff /August 15, 2024

We sat down with newly named Skyforce head coach Dan Bisaccio to help fans get to know him ahead of the 2024-25 season.

What most excites you about the opportunity to be head coach of the Skyforce?

I am most excited about the opportunity to serve the players and staff in Sioux Falls as the head coach. We have had a tremendous amount of success in the history of Skyforce basketball and I’m honored and grateful to be the next coach in carrying on the responsibility of that success. This program is bigger than any one of us and I am ecstatic to serve in this role for the HEAT and Skyforce.

In what ways are you hoping to develop during your time in Sioux Falls?

First and foremost, I am hoping to develop as a leader in Sioux Falls. As a first-year head coach, my priority is working with the players and staff on the Skyforce to foster an environment of growth and development. As the leader, I will challenge this group to pursue excellence in all facets both on and off the court.

How did coaching (and winning) NBA Summer League for the Miami HEAT help you prepare and find your identity as a head coach?

I had a great opportunity of coaching and leading the future players and stars of the NBA/G League. Each player is trying to get an opportunity to prove themselves at the professional level. Summer League allowed me to develop and hone my skills in all aspect of coaching. It taught me about the importance of connection and creating a positive environment while still challenging each person to be the best versions of themselves (including myself).

What do you anticipate being the most challenging aspect of coaching in the NBA G League?

The NBA G League is at the forefront of basketball innovation. It has proven to be the place for young, upcoming players to cut their teeth and hone the skills necessary to make it in the NBA. One of the most challenging aspects is navigating the rigorous schedule that every G League team faces. There are always unexpected challenges that arise with travel, practices, and games. We will always strive to compete at the highest level every day. The ability to handle those obstacles and inevitable problems with determination, empathy, and grace are always key for myself and this program.

Why has the relationship between the HEAT and Skyforce continued to thrive throughout the years? How has it been able to break the norm of having your affiliate team close by?

To say the HEAT and Skyforce relationship has been a success is an understatement. The partnership between the organizations has allowed so many staff and players find success at both the G League and NBA levels. The correlation both organizations have with each other allows everyone to feel a strong connection and ultimately thrive at an elite level even when we are 2,000 miles apart.

Why is it valuable for a team and coaching staff to build a connection with the community?

Sioux Falls is a passionate community that our staff is extremely honored to represent through basketball. Their support day in and day out for our program is second to none in the G League and gives us strength throughout each season. Any opportunity for us to give back and connect with our community on a more personal level is an honor. We look forward to the opportunity to serve and connect with the community of Sioux Falls on a greater level this season.

In what ways are the HEAT still investing in and supporting you during your time in Sioux Falls?

I have been fortunate to spend 10 years in the HEAT system in the video room and on the coaching staff before coming to Sioux Falls. As much as the Heat organization challenges our players to improve 1% every day, we also challenge our staff to do the same. The Arison family, coach Riley, Andy Elisburg, coach Spoelstra and so many others have always supported me and helped me grow both as a coach and as an individual.

For me, they have created such a family atmosphere for the staff and players. Here in Sioux Falls, we always want to represent both the HEAT and Skyforce to the highest standard possible. I am in constant communication with them about what is expected of myself and the rest of our staff and players daily.
