One Minute with Brandon McCoy

By Sioux Falls Skyforce Staff /March 6, 2024

7’1 Force big-man Brandon McCoy has played in 18 games for the Skyforce this season averaging 8.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block per contest. McCoy fills the locker room not only with his size, but with his voice as well, contributing as a vocal leader for the team.

Brandon grew up in Chicago before attending Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, California to play basketball. Here he was a 2017 McDonalds All-American making him one of the top big-man recruits in the country. He played one season at UNLV where he started all 33 games he appeared in, averaging 16.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. McCoy earned Mountain West Freshman of the Year and Mountain West All-Conference Second Team honors with UNLV before beginning his NBA journey with the Milwaukee Bucks G-League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd. He played two years with the Herd before spending time overseas playing in Serbia, Puerto Rico and Belgium. McCoy returned to the G League in 2022 with the Skyforce and has called Sioux Falls his basketball home since.

Favorite Athlete?
Devin Haney

Best talent outside of basketball?
I can play five instruments

Favorite pair of basketball shoes you’ve owned?
Probably the Kyries. Any of the hightop Kyries.

Favorite food?
I love some fried chicken. Can’t go wrong with that.

Favorite music to listen to?
I like Meek Mill.

Favorite off-day activity?
When I’m not playing basketball, I’m watching movies, reading my Koran, but I’m always thinking about basketball so I’m probably doing something to strengthen myself in some way.

Favorite TV show or movie?
I just finished Money Heist but as of lately my favorite show has been The Walking Dead.

If you weren’t playing basketball what do you think you’d be doing?
There’s a couple things I could be doing. I love science, I wanted to be a biologist growing up. If I wanted to stay in an athletic field, it’d probably be boxing. I was a really avid boxer growing up. Without sports though I think I’d be a doctor or scientist.

Funniest teammate?
It varies a lot because all the guys are funny, but the most consistently funny is probably ManMan.

Why do you wear #71?
#71 because I’m 7’1 and they don’t be giving me my height sometimes saying I’m 7’0 but I’m 7’1.

Favorite game you’ve played in?
My favorite game collegiately would probably be against Utah in T Mobile Arena, that was probably my favorite game, I had like 27 and 18 or something like that. Professionally, I would say a game I played in Serbia, I had a really good game. 19 points and 13 rebounds in like 20 minutes so that's probably my favorite.
