By Matt Dykstra | July 3, 2018

Monday, July 2: Summer League Opening Night

The 2018 NBA Summer Leagues tipped off last night with games played in Salt Lake City as part of the Utah Jazz Summer League, as well as Sacramento as part of the California Classic. Though five former Skyforce players were on last night’s rosters, only the three on the Miami HEAT squad got playing time. Below we dive into a recap of each game from last night’s action.

Memphis Grizzlies 101, Atlanta Hawks 88

Notable Performances: Memphis Grizzlies first-round draft pick, Jaren Jackson Jr., showed out in his NBA debut. He dropped 29 points on 8-of-13 shooting from long distance to pace the Grizzlies to victory. Atlanta Hawks rookie Trae Young struggled to find a rhythm from the field, finishing with 16 points while making just 4-of-20 field goal attempts.

Skyforce Connections: None

Golden State Warriors 79, Miami HEAT 68

Notable Performances: With the security of a newly signed NBA contract, Derrick Jones Jr. served as one of the lone bright spots for a Miami HEAT squad that shot just 29.3 percent from the field in the game. Jones Jr. finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds on 7-of-14 FG, making 4-of-5 3FG in the game. Kendrick Nunn led the Golden State Warriors with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Skyforce Connections: The Miami HEAT starting lineup featured three former Skyforce players in Derrick Jones Jr., Derrick Walton Jr. and Ike Nwamu. Though Jones Jr. stole the show, the game marked Nwamu’s first NBA action in his career. Nwamu knocked down a three on the first HEAT possession to get the scoring started, and finished a nice alley-oop dunk in transition to finish the game with five points, two rebounds and two steals. Walton Jr. struggled from the field, much like the rest of the team, finishing with five points, five rebounds and five assists while making just 1-of-12 field goal attempts in the game. The guard play will look to bounce back with a stronger performance against the Lakers tonight.

Utah Jazz 92, San Antonio Spurs 76

Notable Performances: Jazz rookie Grayson Allen put up 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in his NBA debut while NBA G League alum Georges Niang scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Jazz past the Spurs. San Antonio’s Derrick White scored a team-high 22 points, but shot just 9-of-21 from the field in the Spurs’ loss.

Skyforce Connections: Former Skyforce forward Erik McCree went down as a DNP – Coaches Decision last night for the Utah Jazz and will look to get his first run in tonight’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Former Skyforce guard Kris Jenkins did not appear on the box score last night after his name was on the initial San Antonio Spurs Summer League roster. His absence will be something to keep an eye on.

Sacramento Kings 98, Los Angeles Lakers 93

Notable Performances: Sacramento Kings rookie Marvin Bagley III tallied 18 points and six rebounds in his NBA debut, while De’Aaron Fox recored 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead the Kings past the Lakers in what ended up being the best game of the night. Josh Hart (23 points) and Lakers rookie Moritz Wagner (23 points and seven rebounds) tied to lead Los Angeles in scoring in the loss.
